ECE 101 Week 2 Parent and Family Involvement,


Parent and family involvement is very significant and should be encouraged on a daily base. It can sometimes be hard to get parents and family to get involved because all most every body in the house is working doing school hours I would make sure I have something open for the weekend when the parents are off work so that the whole family can get involved, But as long as am trying and encouraging the parent and family to be involved, I am making a difference in a child life. I plan to include my students; families and parent’s in everything we do at school. Whether its story time, science day, field trips, nutrition day, activity to stay fit, or a holiday my classroom door will be open to the families at all times. Family and parents of my students are a main focal point because they need to be involved in their children’s school life and know what’s going on with there child on a daily base. In this paper I will talk about and explain how I plan to involve and encourage parents’ and explain the six types of parent and family involvement. The six types of parent and family involvement are parenting knowledge and skills, communication between the home and school, volunteering at the school and in the community, supporting student learning at home, involvement in decision making and advocacy, and collaboration with the community.

Parenting knowledge and skills assist families with parenting skills and setting home conditions to support children as students and also assist schools to better understand families. (Epstein, Joyce, 2002) My classroom will always be family oriented and at the beginning of the year I would sit with the families and find out information about their children so I will be able to make the child feel as comfortable as possible in my classroom. I will encourage parents to join the O.P.T committee and the meetings to let the family know what are the school and classroom’s policies, rules, procedures and programs available and what the school have to offer to there child I will give parents and other family member’s dutys as classroom aides, club and activity sponsors, curriculum planners, and policy decision makers, when parents and other family members are viewed as experts, empowerment results. (Morrison, 2009) I will also encourage all parents to join the classroom to see what we do and how their child interacts with others. Even if it’s just for story time, science day, or a holiday party event. One thing that my classroom will do is every week go to the library and pick a book to be sent home to be shared with the family to read and every week they will bring it back to exchange it for a new one and tell what they have read and was it shared with the family it would be a family project.

With communicating between home and school you would conduct effective communications from school-to-home and from home-to-school about school programs and student progress. (Epstein, Joyce, 2002) As a teacher I would like to implement a subject planner system, where the child would take a planner home with them each day. In the planner I would write the parent a little note about what the child did in school, what they ate, and any problems or concerns the child had during the day any homework they may have had that week. Then the parent could respond and discuss any concerns they have or just sign their name letting me know they got the note. Having plays, award day, special parties throughout the year will also help bring parents to the school to be involved. Having parents volunteer for activities and doing things like babysitting or bringing a snack in for the class will help get parents and families involved. It allows parents to find a babysitter for their child and also helps out in the classroom.
